Fauna&Flora Registry

Up until this moment, Romania had no system of information management on biodiversity; therefore the default step was to create an integrated web GIS system, with the aim of reporting in the field of nature protection at a national level to the European Commission and the European Environment Agency. The project is in line with Directive 92/23/EEC, the Habitats Directive on the conservation of natural habitats, wild flora and fauna and 79/409/EEC on the conservation of Wild Birds Directive.

The most important step made by implementing the registry was the strengthened centralization of data on nature conservation. The system allows generating QA/QC reports as well as data and operations monitoring and audit (these can be traced and monitored during the reporting periods and between successive reports).

Business processes

  • The reporting database on the protected areas of Community interest for the European Environment Agency in the CDDA (common data bases on protected areas);
  • The reporting database on the protected areas of Community interest (SCI) and special protection for birds (SPA) for the IMAGE (as part of the Nature 2000 and in accordance with the Habitat and birds directives);
  • Reporting database about the conservation status of species and habitats, in accordance with article 17 of the Habitats Directive;
  • Database reporting exemptions for species of Community interest of the IMAGE as part of the system HABIDES.

Description of the System:
The system integrates the Nature 2000 Directive, article 17 of the Habitats for EC and Habides systems. The web component-GIS publishes services through the ESRI ArcGIS Server and gives the user the option of selecting, viewing, editing and analysis/synthesis.
